Smoker’s $8 Million Award Could Open Door to More Suits
A federal jury in Connecticut has awarded $8 million to a woman who developed larynx cancer after smoking cigarettes for more than 20 years. The total could leap to as much as $24 million if the judge decides to award punitive damages in a subsequent hearing. It is believed to be the first successful product liability lawsuit in the state by an individual plaintiff against a tobacco company, and one of only a few such suits to go to trial in the Northeast.
