Few Minorities Hold Positions as Court Law Clerks, Staff Attorneys in Texas
In the 10 years Jennifer Lewis Williams has worked at the 5th Court of Appeals in Dallas, she has been the court's only African-American staff attorney. That lack of diversity persists throughout the state's appellate courts. The reasons for it, and possible solutions, remain in dispute. Williams says part of the problem may be that many black attorneys do not have other lawyers to speak for them as references. But others cite the lack of turnover and the lure of better-paying jobs for qualified candidates.
