Class Action Status Doesn’t Stick to Teflon Lawsuits

December 15, 2008

A federal judge in Des Moines, Iowa, has denied class action status in two dozen lawsuits challenging the safety of Teflon-coated cookware. U.S. District Judge Ronald Longstaff ruled that the cases, which would cover cookware buyers in 23 states and could be worth up to $5 billion, were too unwieldy to figure out who should be members of the proposed classes. The cases involve questions about possible toxic fumes released when cookware coated with Teflon is heated above a certain temperature.
