Challenge to $40 Million Contingency Fee Now in Referee’s Hands
The question of whether Graubard Miller deserved a $42 million contingency fee from a settlement it obtained just five months after its elderly client agreed to switch from an hourly rate is now in a referee's hands. In closing arguments Wednesday, Daniel Kornstein, who represents the estate of Alice Lawrence, insisted she "did not understand the ramifications" of changing her fee arrangement due to medication she was taking. "This is a case that drags the legal profession through the mud," said Kornstein.
