Broke Prosecutors Try Tacking on Extra Fees
Financially strapped prosecutors are proposing a novel concept: ordering defendants to pay for excessive investigative and prosecutorial costs, as was done with former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Prosecutors in Ohio, California and Rhode Island have made similar requests, and should continue to do so, says Tom Sneddon of the National District Attorneys Association. Sneddon says defendants can be ordered to reimburse the government as part of a plea agreement or a condition of probation.
