Willkie Farr Confirms Trans-Atlantic Alliance With Dickson Minto

After months of speculation, New York's Willkie Farr & Gallagher and Anglo-Scots boutique Dickson Minto have announced that they have formed a strategic alliance. The firms are bolstering their relationship to strengthen Willkie's presence in London, as well as tapping into Dickson Minto's U.K. private equity expertise and opening up more opportunities for Dickson Minto in the U.S. and Europe. The two firms will operate independently.

EBay Told to Pay $61 Million to Fashion Company Over Sales of Fake Goods

A French court has ordered eBay to pay more than $61 million to a high-end fashion company because counterfeit goods were sold on the auction site. LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA had complained it was hurt by the sale of knockoff items on eBay. An adviser to the company said the decision was an answer to the question of whether the Internet is a "free-for-all for the most hateful, parasitic practices." EBay countered that LVMH is merely uncomfortable with Internet auctions, which cut out the middleman.

Hunton & Williams is opening a San Francisco office with a trio of Akin Gump labor attorneys -- part of an eight-lawyer group that's also expanding Hunton's offices in Los Angeles, Dallas and Houston. Akin Gump is losing San Francisco partners Brett Burns and Fraser McAlpine and associate Anna Suh in the move. Akin partners Roland Juarez and Laura Franze will both join Hunton in Los Angeles but will also be working in Texas. Also, three Akin associates are joining Hunton's Dallas office.

Law firm marketers are enjoying large salary increases, according to 's 2008 Salary and Billing Survey. Firms across Texas gave raises this year of about 4 to 4.5 percent for most legal and nonlegal staff members, and marketing directors were among those to see the highest average pay raises of 7.8 percent, from $68,636 to $73,984. "I think law firms are becoming more and more sophisticated in the use of marketing and public relations," says Munsch Hardt Chairman and CEO Glenn Callison.
